The aim of the workshop is to bring together young researchers from different disciplines and provide them with an opportunity to discuss their papers and ongoing research.

The workshop will feature three Keynote Speeches by renowned scholars.

The conference will include presentations on the Economics of Innovation, Science, Complexity and Knowledge . We encourage participants to apply with works from a wide range of methods and subdisciplines, fitting into these topics. Participants will have the chance to present one paper during the Workshop. They also will have the opportunity to receive helpful feedbacks from distinguished faculty members and external scholars. A senior researcher is going to lead a 10 minutes discussion of the paper after the presentation.

To apply for the Workshop, applicants must submit an extended abstract of the paper (maximum 3 pages). The full paper will be required a couple of weeks before the Workshop. See below for futher details about the application.

The workshop will take place in presence on December 15–16th, 2022 at the Collegio Carlo Alberto in Turin, it will require a 50 euros participation fee.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Ron Boschma

Ron Boschma is Full Professor in Regional Economics at the Faculty of Geosciences, University of Utrecht. He also holds a chair in Innovation Studies at the UiS Business School at Stavanger University.

Boschma is heading a research group at Utrecht University that has laid the foundations of a new influential stream of research, namely Evolutionary Economic Geography. Boschma has published in international journals in the fields of Evolutionary Economic Geography, spatial evolution of industries, the geography of innovation, the structure and evolution of spatial networks, agglomeration externalities and regional growth, and regional diversification.

Boschma received an Honorary Doctorate in Natural Sciences from Marburg University in Germany in July 2013. Thomson Reuters has ranked Boschma among the top 1% of cited researchers worldwide since 2014. Boschma held Guest Professorships at Toulouse University, Cagliari University and the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis. He is the editor of the Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society and associate editor of Industrial and Corporate Change, Papers in Regional Science and Regional Studies.

César Hidalgo

César A. Hidalgo is heading the Center for Collective Learning at the Artificial and Natural Intelligence Institute (ANITI) of the University of Toulouse. He is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Manchester and a Visiting Professor at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

He is one of the leading founders of the economics of complexity. His research contributions span the economics of complexity, data visualization and applied artificial intelligence. Between 2010 and 2019 Hidalgo led MIT’s Collective Learning group. Prior to working at MIT, Hidalgo was a research fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Hidalgo is also a founder of Datawheel, an award winning company specialized in the creation of data distribution and visualization systems. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Notre Dame.

Hidalgo’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2018 Lagrange Prize and three Webby Awards. Hidalgo's is also the author of dozens of peer-reviewed papers and of three books.

Simona Iammarino

Simona Iammarino is Professor of Economic Geography in the Department of Geography & Environment of the London School of Economics and Political Science (UK). She was Head of Department (2014-2017), and academic member of the LSE Council (2016-2020). Simona has been an affiliate faculty member at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) L’Aquila, Italy, since 2016, and member of the Board of the LSE-Cañada Blanch Centre since 2021. She was elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) and Fellow of the Regional Studies Association (FeRSA) in 2017, and Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA) in 2018.

Simona’s main research interests lie in the following areas: Multinational corporations, globalisation and local economic development; Geography of innovation and technological change; Regional systems of innovation; Regional and local economic development and policy. She has published more than 60 articles in major peer-reviewed journals, two co-authored books, around 30 book chapters, and numerous working papers, policy reports and other publications.

She was co-editor of Regional Studies (2008-2013), is currently co-editor of the Journal of Economic Geography, and a member of the RSA Board and Chair of the RSA Publication Committee. Simona has a long-term experience in externally funded international research projects, and in consultancy projects for various international organisations (e.g. EU Commission, OECD, United Nations) and government agencies.

The workshop will take place at the Collegio Carlo Alberto building in Piazza Arbarello, 8 (Turin), which formerly hosted the School of Economics of the University of Turin.

The Collegio Carlo Alberto is a foundation created in 2004 as a joint initiative of the Compagnia di San Paolo and the University of Torino. Its mission is to foster research and education in the social sciences, in accordance with the values and practices of the international academic community.

Only PhD Students can apply?

While PhD Students are the main target of the Workshop, also 1st-year Post-docs and last-year Master Students are welcome to apply.

If I don't have a full paper yet, can I apply anyway?

Each participant has to present something, because the spirit of the event is to create a community that shares ideas and research questions. While the deadline for extended abstracts is in early October, the deadline for the full paper will be in early December.

Can I attend the Workshop without presenting?

Unfortunately, we cannot welcome non-presenting participants. The workshop is meant for early-career researchers wanting to get valid feedback on their work in progress. Therefore, each participant is supposed to present.

Will you publish the final papers?

No, the final papers will be shared only with the senior discussant that is in charge of your session, in order to give you a proper feedback.

What is included in the €50 fee?

The fee includes the access to the Collegio Carlo Alberto infrastructures, coffee breaks, lunches, and the social dinner. The fee does NOT include the accommodation facilities, the traveling and transportation costs, and any other social activity outside of the social dinner. While are currently working to secure funding for your accommodations and travel expenses, we cannot guarantee them at this stage.
